I Am What’s Wrong
Sheila Burke teaches growth, compassion, and how to take responsibility for our lives. She offers practical wisdom and a touch of humor to make the medicine go down easily. Use her words as tools for becoming, for living with grace. —Jacob Nordby, author Blessed Are the Weird – A Manifesto for Creatives
Sheila Burke begins with one premise: we all are compassion-capable. Through her gentle yet firm writing, she offers an incisive questioning into our history and beliefs, urging us to find strength not by evading inner turmoil, but by opting to grow despite our flaws and limitations. This isn’t your run of the mill theoretical guide for self-improvement, I Am What’s Wrong is about offering the reader attainable, concrete solutions. In this way, Burke recognizes that respect is made not from introspection alone, but in the active decision to be of service to others in our daily lives. Changing the world takes more than lofty discussion, she insists, it takes personal accountability and formidable understanding. But above all, courage. —Cindy Lamothe, Writer, Antigua Guatemala
Eye-opening, illuminating, and insightful. Sheila Burke’s I Am What’s Wrong is a terrific resource for personal growth and loaded with practical tools for change. —Karen Salmansohn, best-selling author of Think Happy, NYC
What I really loved about this book is a sense of infinite optimism that the words are radiating. The fact that the information in it is information that when applied by us will make better in all areas of our life and also improve the quality of life both for people and animals on this beautiful green, blue planet that unfortunately many people forget is our mother and home. The book is so versatile that you can read the chapters independently which for me is very cool. If you want to feel better about yourself, if you’re going to improve everyday actions that you do and know they are not quite right, if you’re going to be a source of kindness around you, then this beautiful book will help you achieve it.

I Am What’s Wrong is a tonic. It’s a nicely-plotted, homespun and effective heuristic for reconnecting, and rebuilding ourselves and our relationships with each other and with the planet. The format is clear and simple. Each chapter identifies a tool useful in rejecting the book’s very title! The reader is clearly-steered through short sets of practical goals to a path of engagement and connectivity with others and with the environment. If you want to be a better global citizen, a better parent or a better neighbor, you might want to investigate this book. —Avril McInally, Public Librarian, Cleveland, Ohio
In life, things are either expanding or contracting. There is no staying the same. As we get older we often contract our lives by doing more of what we are familiar and comfortable with and doing less new things. This often makes our lives smaller and more self-centered. This book gives you lots of ways you can expand your life, which after all as creative beings, is what we are supposed to do until we cease to be.

It’s difficult at first to really process your emotions in volatile times when everyone is screaming that others are to blame. Sheila encourages us to really look into the heart of the matter with this one line “As long as we are honest with ourselves, and work to examine our own issues, we are on the right track.” She goes on to add “Understanding there is no us and them is critical.” And that right there my friends is why you need to read this book.
We have to be willing to find some common ground. And just as I teach through words, yoga, and simple conversations we have to be willing to reach out, not lash out, and ask the hard questions. Thanks Sheila for walking me home. —Aimee Halpin, yoga teacher and author of theburnedhand.com
